NIHR Global Health Research Unit on Global Surgery @Nigeria Hub

The NIHR hub in Nigeria is located at College of Medicine University of Lagos and Lagos University Teaching Hospital (CMUL/LUTH)

The NIHR GSU hub in Nigeria is located at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos/Lagos University Teaching Hospital (CMUL/LUTH).

The University of Lagos is a leading Nigerian institution, dedicated to quality teaching, learning, research, and community service. The University records outstanding research breakthroughs as her research culture is fostered through supports for research collaborations, conferences, symposiums, etc. The University is also committed to the healthy living of the populace through involvement in various health researches such as that of GlobalSurg in improving the surgical outcomes of patients. With the high number of deaths due to very limited access to quality health care in Nigeria, and the common knowledge of post-surgery complications responsible for a large proportion of morbidity and mortality; the importance of the GlobalSurg research in Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized.

The Nigeria Hub is led by Prof. Adesoji Ademuyiwa, a Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Medicine University of Lagos, and Head of Paediatric Surgery Unit, Lagos University Teaching Hospital. He is being assisted by Prof. Adewale Adisa of the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), a Professor of Surgery at College of Health Sviences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.  The Hub administration is overseen by Emmanuel Williams, the National Hub Manager. He is responsible for the day to day running of the hub and delivers support to the spoke hospitals within Nigeria. He is supported by Adeola Orowale who is also the National Finance Officer.

The Hub’s Senior Research Nurse and Project Officer, Chinelo Mgbemena, supports the research projects in Nigeria. She is assisted by Moyosoluwa Ojo, the Research Nurse/Community Engagement and Involvement (CEI) Officer. Christianah Oyegbola, the National Data Manager, manages the research data of the hub and spoke hospitals.

The Nigeria Hub is currently supporting 26 spoke hospitals from Colleges of Medicine, Teaching Hospitals, District Hospitals, and Federal Medical Centres across Nigeria.
